Rohit, attempting to dominate from the outset, was caught at square leg, a dismissal that set the tone for a tense beginning. Suryakumar Yadav, known for his innovative stroke play, couldn't find his rhythm and succumbed soon after.
Virat Kohli, stepping in under immense pressure, anchored the innings with a composed and strategic approach. His early struggle was evident as he focused on rotating the strike and preserving his wicket. Kohli's partnership with Rishabh Pant was crucial in stabilizing the innings. Pant's aggressive 15-ball cameo, although short-lived, provided the necessary impetus before he was deceived by a full toss from Keshav Maharaj.

Hardik Pandya's arrival at the crease marked a turning point. Known for his big-hitting prowess, Pandya played a counter-attacking innings, scoring 47 off 31 balls. His powerful strikes, especially against the pacers, alleviated the pressure on Kohli. Together, they put up a crucial partnership, steering India towards a competitive total.

As the innings approached its climax, Kohli unleashed his aggressive side. The final overs saw a flurry of boundaries and quick runs. Kohli's 76 off 48 balls was a testament to his adaptability and skill in T20 cricket. His assault on Marco Jansen in the 19th over, which included six and two boundaries, exemplified his ability to accelerate at the right moment.
Hardik Pandya complemented Kohli's efforts with his aggressive strokes, ensuring India added 42 runs in the last three overs. Their combined efforts propelled India to a total of 176, a score that provided their bowlers with a fighting chance.

Chasing 177, South Africa began their innings with a mix of aggression and caution. Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks aimed to set a solid foundation. De Kock, playing his last innings in a South African shirt, displayed his trademark fluency. His early dismissal, caught at square leg off Arshdeep Singh, was a significant blow for South Africa.
Reeza Hendricks followed soon after, falling to a slower delivery from Jasprit Bumrah that breached his defence. These early wickets put South Africa on the back foot, but Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen sought to stabilize the innings.
